Microbial Fuel Cells: A promising bio-electrochemical system for wastewater treatment and energy generation
Author: Shaik Ashmath and Taw Gwan Lee*,
Dept. of Environmental Science, Keimyung University, Daegu, South Korea
Abstract: Wastewater treatment refers to the removal or degradation of toxic pollutants, microorganisms, and harmful contaminants from the water through conventional physical, biological and chemical treatments. A large volume of wastewater is treated at the waste-water treatment plants (WWTPs) with the expense of energy and the conventional WWTPs are no longer sustainable in this energy crisis scenario. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), a bio electrochemical system is now gaining a lot of attention in recent times as a potential wastewater treatment technology which can remove and degrade the organic pollutants at the same time, simultaneously generating the useful electricity. This review articles overviews the basic concepts of MFCs, types, components, electron transfer mechanisms, energy generation with various wastewater treatment substrates and its applications.

Abstract: Microalgae are represent a group of photosynthetic prokaryotes as cyanobacteria and eukaryotes as other group of algae, which can colonize various habitats including terrestrial environment. Macroscopic biofilms were collected from alluvial plain soils and mangrove soils representing the Lower Gangetic Plains of West Bengal, India. The composition of the biofilms was investigated using light microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy of collected samples. In this study four simple trichal non-heterocytous morphotypes were found to be unique along with unicellular one. Three cyanobacterial and one green alga morphotypes clearly showed differences with respect to described taxa as based on most recent taxonomic classification and possibly represent new report from the Indian subcontinent. This study provides vital information on morphotypic diversity of microalgae from specific biotopes which can contribute key information on their biogeography and potential application for environmental management and remediation.

Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between alcohol consumption and smoking among Korean College student academic score. Class attendance was considered as important mediator in this research paper. An online self-administered questionnaire was shared with students through university portal system to collect the data. The results of this research revile that smoking and alcohol are highly correlated and students who drink more are more likely to smoke. Research results also explain that both Alcohol consumption and chain smoking affected students’ academic performance. This paper also explored the mediating role of skipping class on alcohol consumption and students grade to determine if the students who reported to consume more alcohol also reported to have a high rate of skipping class and a lower GPA (grade point average).
